There is always a book that gets iffy reviews and you are reluctant to read because of it. But me being me, I like to form my own opinions about things. So I do give them a try, with an open mind of course. These ten books that I am about to list are books I loved more than I expected I would. Gosh I sure do love surprises!

Top 10 Ten

Seven Ways We Lie

Seven Ways We LieSeven students. Seven (deadly) sins. One secret.

Paloma High School is ordinary by anyone’s standards. It’s got the same cliques, the same prejudices, the same suspect cafeteria food. And like every high school, every student has something to hide—from Kat, the thespian who conceals her trust issues onstage, to Valentine, the neurotic genius who’s planted the seed of a school scandal.

When that scandal bubbles over, and rumors of a teacher-student affair surface, everyone starts hunting for someone to blame. For the seven unlikely allies at the heart of it all, the collision of their seven ordinary-seeming lives results in extraordinary change.

The Serpent King

The Serpent KingDill has had to wrestle with vipers his whole life at home, as the only son of a Pentecostal minister who urges him to handle poisonous rattlesnakes, and at school, where he faces down bullies who target him for his father’s extreme faith and very public fall from grace.

The only antidote to all this venom is his friendship with fellow outcasts Travis and Lydia. But as they are starting their senior year, Dill feels the coils of his future tightening around him. Dill’s only escapes are his music and his secret feelings for Lydia, neither of which he is brave enough to share. Graduation feels more like an ending to Dill than a beginning. But even before then, he must cope with another ending- one that will rock his life to the core.

Unrivaled

UnrivaledEveryone wants to be someone.

Layla Harrison wants to leave her beach-bum days for digs behind a reporter’s desk. Aster Amirpour wants to scream at the next casting director who tells her “we need ethnic but not your kind of ethnic.” Tommy Phillips dreams of buying a twelve-string guitar and using it to shred his way back into his famous absentee dad’s life.

But Madison Brooks took destiny and made it her bitch a long time ago.

She’s Hollywood’s hottest starlet, and the things she did to become the name on everyone’s lips are merely a stain on the pavement, ground beneath her Louboutin heel.

That is, until Layla, Aster, and Tommy find themselves with a VIP invite to the glamorous and gritty world of Los Angeles’s nightlife and lured into a high-stakes competition where Madison Brooks is the target. Just as their hopes begin to gleam like stars through the California smog, Madison Brooks goes missing. . . . And all of their hopes are blacked out in the haze of their lies.

The Scorpion Rules

The Scorpion RulesGreta is a Duchess and a Crown Princess. She is also a Child of Peace, a hostage held by the de facto ruler of the world, the great Artificial Intelligence, Talis. This is how the game is played: if you want to rule, you must give one of your children as a hostage. Start a war and your hostage dies.

The system has worked for centuries. Parents don’t want to see their children murdered.

Greta will be free if she can make it to her eighteenth birthday. Until then she is prepared to die with dignity, if necessary. But everything changes when Elian arrives at the Precepture. He’s a hostage from a new American alliance, and he defies the machines that control every part of their lives—and is severely punished for it. His rebellion opens Greta’s eyes to the brutality of the rules they live under, and to the subtle resistance of her companions. And Greta discovers her own quiet power.

Then Elian’s country declares war on Greta’s and invades the prefecture, taking the hostages hostage. Now the great Talis is furious, and coming himself to deliver punishment. Which surely means that Greta and Elian will be killed…unless Greta can think of a way to break all the rules.

The Impossible Fortress

The Impossible FortressBilly Marvin’s first love was a computer. Then he met Mary Zelinsky.

Do you remember your first love?

The Impossible Fortress begins with a magazine…The year is 1987 and Playboy has just published scandalous photographs of Vanna White, from the popular TV game show Wheel of Fortune. For three teenage boys—Billy, Alf, and Clark—who are desperately uneducated in the ways of women, the magazine is somewhat of a Holy Grail: priceless beyond measure and impossible to attain. So, they hatch a plan to steal it.

The heist will be fraught with peril: a locked building, intrepid police officers, rusty fire escapes, leaps across rooftops, electronic alarm systems, and a hyperactive Shih Tzu named Arnold Schwarzenegger. Failed attempt after failed attempt leads them to a genius master plan—they’ll swipe the security code to Zelinsky’s convenience store by seducing the owner’s daughter, Mary Zelinsky. It becomes Billy’s mission to befriend her and get the information by any means necessary. But Mary isn’t your average teenage girl. She’s a computer loving, expert coder, already strides ahead of Billy in ability, with a wry sense of humor and a hidden, big heart. But what starts as a game to win Mary’s affection leaves Billy with a gut-wrenching choice: deceive the girl who may well be his first love or break a promise to his best friends.

The Sun is Also a Star

The Sun is Also a StarNatasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

Tell Me Three Things

Tell Me Three ThingsEverything about Jessie is wrong. At least, that’s what it feels like during her first week of junior year at her new ultra-intimidating prep school in Los Angeles. Just when she’s thinking about hightailing it back to Chicago, she gets an email from a person calling themselves Somebody/Nobody (SN for short), offering to help her navigate the wilds of Wood Valley High School. Is it an elaborate hoax? Or can she rely on SN for some much-needed help?

It’s been barely two years since her mother’s death, and because her father eloped with a woman he met online, Jessie has been forced to move across the country to live with her stepmonster and her pretentious teenage son.

In a leap of faith—or an act of complete desperation—Jessie begins to rely on SN, and SN quickly becomes her lifeline and closest ally. Jessie can’t help wanting to meet SN in person. But are some mysteries better left unsolved?

Top 10 Ten

Yes PleaseIN A PERFECT WORLD…

We’d get to hang out with Amy Poehler, watching dumb movies, listening to music, and swapping tales about our coworkers and difficult childhoods. Because in a perfect world, we’d all be friends with Amy — someone who seems so fun, is full of interesting stories, tells great jokes, and offers plenty of advice and wisdom (the useful kind, not the annoying kind you didn’t ask for, anyway). Unfortunately, between her Golden Globe-winning role on Parks and Recreation, work as a producer and director, place as one of the most beloved SNL alumni and cofounder of the Upright Citizens Brigade, involvement with the website Smart Girls at the Party, frequent turns as acting double for Meryl Streep, and her other gig as the mom of two young sons, she’s not available for movie night.

Luckily, we have the next best thing: Yes Please, Amy’s hilarious and candid book. A collection of stories, thoughts, ideas, lists, and haiku from the mind of one of our most beloved entertainers, Yes Please offers Amy’s thoughts on everything from her “too safe” childhood outside of Boston to her early days in New York City, her ideas about Hollywood and “the biz,” the demon that looks back at all of us in the mirror, and her joy at being told she has a “face for wigs.” Yes Please is a chock-full of words and wisdom to live by.

Top 10 Nine

If You Ask Me (And of Course You Won't)It-girl Betty White delivers a hilarious, slyly profound take on love, life, celebrity, and everything in between.

Drawing from a lifetime of lessons learned, seven-time Emmy winner Betty White’s wit and wisdom take center stage as she tackles topics like friendship, romantic love, aging, television, fans, love for animals, and the brave new world of celebrity. If You Ask Me mixes her thoughtful observations with humorous stories from a seven- decade career in Hollywood. Longtime fans and new fans alike will relish Betty’s candid take on everything from her rumored crush on Robert Redford (true) to her beauty regimen (“I have no idea what color my hair is and I never intend to find out”) to the Facebook campaign that helped persuade her to host Saturday Night Live despite her having declined the hosting job three times already.

Featuring all-new material, with a focus on the past fifteen years of her life, If You Ask Me is funny, sweet, and to the point-just like Betty White.

Top 10 Eight

You're Never Weird on the Internet (almost)From online entertainment mogul, actress, and “queen of the geeks” Felicia Day, a funny, quirky, and inspiring memoir about her unusual upbringing, her rise to Internet-stardom, and embracing her individuality to find success in Hollywood.

The Internet isn’t all cat videos. There’s also Felicia Day—violinist, filmmaker, Internet entrepreneur, compulsive gamer, hoagie specialist, and former lonely homeschooled girl who overcame her isolated childhood to become the ruler of a new world… or at least semi-influential in the world of Internet Geeks and Goodreads book clubs.

After growing up in the south where she was “home-schooled for hippie reasons”, Felicia moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and was immediately typecast as a crazy cat-lady secretary. But Felicia’s misadventures in Hollywood led her to produce her own web series, own her own production company, and become an Internet star.

Felicia’s short-ish life and her rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Now, Felicia’s strange world is filled with thoughts on creativity, video games, and a dash of mild feminist activism—just like her memoir.

Top 10 Seven

Seriously... I'm KiddingEveryone loves Ellen! Television icon, actress and proud wife, Ellen is a star like none other. This comedienne is known for her talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which is going strong in its eighth season.

Seriously… I’m Kidding is a look at Ellen’s life through her humour.

In her own words, Ellen says, “I’ve experienced a whole lot the last few years and I have a lot to share … I think you’ll find I’ve left no stone unturned, no door unopened, no window unbroken, no rug unvacuumed, no ivories untickled. What I’m saying is, let us begin, shall we?”

Ellen was also most memorably the voice of Dory in Finding Nemo, hosted the Oscars and served as a judge on American Idol.

Top 10 Six

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Top 10 Five

Chelsea Chelsea Bang BangThe hilarious new book from the star of Chelsea Lately and the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea.

Get ready for big laughs as Chelsea Handler lets loose with more comic personal essays. In this new, no-holds-barred account of life on the ridiculous side, Chelsea mines the wealth of material that is her family, her sex life, her career, and her distinctively outrageous worldview. Here is young Chelsea discovering “The Feeling” during a third-grade sleepover and getting shafted by clueless parents over Cabbage Patch dolls…and grown-up Chelsea at the mercy of the remote control, Lean Pockets, and Sex and the City –but still managing to convince her boyfriend that there are Swiss Army knives in the soles of her $16,000 shoes. Through it all, Chelsea never lets anyone off the hook, even herself, as she delivers page after page of irreverent humor, biting wit, and deliciously off-kilter entertainment.

Top 10 Four

The Girl with the Lower Back TattooThe Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star of Inside Amy Schumer and the acclaimed film Trainwreck has taken the entertainment world by storm with her winning blend of smart, satirical humor. Now, Amy Schumer has written a refreshingly candid and uproariously funny collection of (extremely) personal and observational essays.

In The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and sex and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is – a woman with the courage to bare her soul to stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh.

Ranging from the raucous to the romantic, the heartfelt to the harrowing, this highly entertaining and universally appealing collection is the literary equivalent of a night out with your best friends – an unforgettable and fun adventure that you wish could last forever. Whether she’s experiencing lust-at-first-sight while in the airport security line, sharing her own views on love and marriage, admitting to being an introvert, or discovering her cross-fit instructor’s secret bad habit, Amy Schumer proves to be a bighearted, brave, and thoughtful storyteller that will leave you nodding your head in recognition, laughing out loud, and sobbing uncontrollably – but only because it’s over.

Top 10 Three

Scrappy Little NobodyA collection of humorous autobiographical essays by the Academy Award-nominated actress and star of Up in the Air and Pitch Perfect.

Even before she made a name for herself on the silver screen starring in films like Pitch Perfect, Up in the Air, Twilight, and Into the Woods, Anna Kendrick was unusually small, weird, and “10 percent defiant.”

At the ripe age of thirteen, she had already resolved to “keep the crazy inside my head where it belonged. Forever. But here’s the thing about crazy: It. Wants. Out.” In Scrappy Little Nobody, she invites readers inside her brain, sharing extraordinary and charmingly ordinary stories with candor and winningly wry observations.

With her razor-sharp wit, Anna recounts the absurdities she’s experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture as only she can—from her unusual path to the performing arts (Vanilla Ice and baggy neon pants may have played a role) to her double life as a middle-school student who also starred on Broadway to her initial “dating experiments” (including only liking boys who didn’t like her back) to reviewing a binder full of butt doubles to her struggle to live like an adult woman instead of a perpetual “man-child.”

Enter Anna’s world and follow her rise from “scrappy little nobody” to somebody who dazzles on the stage, the screen, and now the page—with an electric, singular voice, at once familiar and surprising, sharp and sweet, funny and serious (well, not that serious).

top-10-two

Why Not Me?From the author of the beloved New York Times bestselling book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and the creator and star of The Mindy Project comes a collection of essays that are as hilarious and insightful as they are deeply personal.

In Why Not Me?, Kaling shares her ongoing journey to find contentment and excitement in her adult life, whether it’s falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in lonely places, attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behavior modification whatsoever, or most important, believing that you have a place in Hollywood when you’re constantly reminded that no one looks like you.

In “How to Look Spectacular: A Starlet’s Confessions”, Kaling gives her tongue-in-cheek secrets for surefire on-camera beauty, (“Your natural hair color may be appropriate for your skin tone, but this isn’t the land of appropriate-this is Hollywood, baby. Out here, a dark-skinned woman s traditional hair color is honey blonde.”) “Player” tells the story of Kaling being seduced and dumped by a female friend in L.A. (“I had been replaced by a younger model. And now they had matching bangs.”) In “Unlikely Leading Lady”, she muses on America’s fixation with the weight of actresses, (“Most women we see onscreen are either so thin that they’re walking clavicles or so huge that their only scenes involve them breaking furniture.”) And in “Soup Snakes”, Kaling spills some secrets on her relationship with her ex-boyfriend and close friend, B.J. Novak (“I will freely admit: my relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell.”)

Mindy turns the anxieties, the glamour, and the celebrations of her second coming-of-age into a laugh-out-loud funny collection of essays that anyone who’s ever been at a turning point in their life or career can relate to. And those who’ve never been at a turning point can skip to the parts where she talks about meeting Bradley Cooper.

Top 10 One

You Deserve a DrinkA riotously funny collection of boozy misadventures from the creator of the YouTube series, “You Deserve a Drink”

Mamrie Hart is a drinking star with a Youtube problem. As host of the bawdy cult-hit, “You Deserve a Drink,” Hart has been entertaining viewers with her signature concoction of tasty libations and raunchy puns since 2011. Finally, Hart has compiled her best drinking stories—and worst hangovers—into one hilarious volume. From the spring break where she and her girlfriends avoided tan lines by staying at an all-male gay nudist resort, to the bachelorette party where she accidentally hired a sixty year old meth head to teach the group pole dancing, to the time she lit herself on fire during a Flaming Lips concert, Hart accompanies each story with an original cocktail recipe, ensuring that You Deserve a Drink is as useful as it is entertaining.

The Love InterestThere is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.

The Alchemists of LoomHer vengeance. His vision.

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

Top 10 One

Ruthlessly Sinister Villains | Top 10 Tuesday

TOP-10-TUESDAY-NEW

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another Top 10 Tuesday weekly fun on my blog! Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. If you want to join in the fun, hop on over to their blog to see what it’s all about!

This week’s topic is Top 10 Ruthlessly Sinister Villains.

You all know at least one ruthlessly sinister villain. Whether it be from your favorite book, or tv, or movie, or even from the comic books. Being an avid reader, I know many sinister villains. They can sometimes be one of my favorite characters. I find them complex and compelling to read, and without them our heroes can’t reach the greatness we know they will.

So without further ado, here are some ruthlessly sinister villains for all to enjoy!

10. Queen Irina from The Shadow Queen

The Shadow Queen

Queen Irina is not to be trusted. She married her dead sister’s husband to kill him and his children in order to be the rightful heir. But of course things never go as planned for the villain. The said children survived and are coming back to reclaim their kingdom and Queen Irina will stop at nothing, and I mean nothing, to keep that from happening!

9. Queen of Hearts from Splintered

Splintered

The Queen of Hearts is a tyrant in almost all her retellings. This one is no surprise! She thinks Wonderland is rightfully hers to rule with an iron thumb. But Alyssa doesn’t agree. The Queen of Hearts needs to be stopped from finding a permanent to host her sinister soul. But she will definitely not go down easy. Wonderland will never be the same again when she is gets through with it!

8. Draewulf from Storm Siren

Storm Siren

Draewulf is just plain evil. He will cut you open and hop into your body to overtake your soul. Of course like all villains, his plan is to take over the world. Which means he must get rid of all the Elementals left living, including our heroine Nym. No land is safe once Draewulf takes over, and the best part is, no one even knows what he looks like. Suprise!

7. Queen Olympias from Legacy of Kings

Legacy of Kings

Queen Olympias is just plain crazy. Not only does she prance around doing spiritual spells and incantations, but she also plays with snakes. And by play, I mean she lets them bite her and such. She will stop at nothing to get her son, Alexander, his rightful spot on the throne. Even if that means she has to kill everyone to do so, including her daughter.

6. Manon from Heir of Fire

Heir of Fire

Now I know Manon is not the true villain of the Throne of Glass series, but she is being used by one. It doesn’t help that she has razor sharp teeth and finger nails and comes with her own squad of other ruthless witches and their dragon companions. They feed off scared humans, piece by piece. I wouldn’t want to cross paths with her, that’s for sure!

5. King Gaius from Throne of Glass

Falling Kingdoms

King Gaius is nothing but cold and ruthless. All he wants is to be the ruler of pretty much everything. He had no trouble taking over two other kingdoms, including killing everyone that got in his way. He even goes as far as to use his only children to achieve this. From public beheadings, to behind the scenes murder and torture, King Gaius has done it all.

4. The Darkling from Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone

The Darkling doesn’t come off as the villain in the first book. He makes you fall in love with him and when you least expect it shit hits the fan! He wants Ravka and everywhere else he can get his grubby hands on to live in the Fold, a perpetually dark and dangerous place. Thankfully for our resident sun summoner. What better way to fight off the darkness, then with some light!

3. Voldemort from Harry Potter

HP and the Deathly Hollows

Voldemort is probably one of the most famous book villains there ever was. He wants to be the most powerful wizard there ever was. The only thing standing in his way is the child he couldn’t kill oh so many years before. But that won’t stop him from coming back and finishing the job. Voldermort leaves a trail of death wherever he goes and with his dark army of wizards behind him, our heroes better get together and be prepared to fight back!

2. Talis from The Scorpion Rules

The Scorpion Rules

If you want to talk about ruthless then meet Talis. He is a 400 year old artificial intelligence that currently runs the world we call Earth. Although his intentions are well, like stopping the world from warring, or rationing off water supply, doesn’t mean he’s not opposed to blowing up a city or country to do so. He even goes as far as taking children hostages from all the royals and rulers of the Earth to prevent them from making big moves. Just think, one moment you’re living your life, and then the next Talis blows up it up. No thank you.

1. Jackal from Red Rising

Red Rising

I’ve saved the most sinister for last. The Jackal is by far the grimiest, dirtiest, creepy, calculating, conniving villain I have ever known. In the first book he wants to win no matter what. Even if it means killing in the most ruthless ways including cannibalism. The second book is all about building trust and conniving his way to the top. And the final book has him executing all his planning and going behind everyone’s back to achieve ultimate domination.

Top 10 YA Fantasy Books | Top 10 Tuesday

TOP-10-TUESDAY-NEW

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another Top 10 Tuesday weekly fun on my blog! Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. If you want to join in the fun, hop on over to their blog to see what it’s all about!

This week’s topic is Top 10 YA Fantasy Books.

You all should know by now that YA fantasy is my genre of choice. Why you ask? Well first off, who doesn’t like escaping from the real world into a world with fantastical elements? Second, the possibilities are endless in the fantasy genre with characters, magic, world building etc.

So if you don’t read fantasy or want to expand with new books, then I suggest you take a look at my all time faves in the YA Fantasy genre!

10. Storm Siren

Storm SirenIn a world at war, a slave girl’s lethal curse could become one kingdom’s weapon of salvation. If the curse—and the girl—can be controlled.

As a slave in the war-weary kingdom of Faelen, seventeen-year-old Nym isn’t merely devoid of rights, her Elemental kind are only born male and always killed at birth — meaning, she shouldn’t even exist.

Standing on the auction block beneath smoke-drenched mountains, Nym faces her fifteenth sell. But when her hood is removed and her storm-summoning killing curse revealed, Nym is snatched up by a court advisor and given a choice: be trained as the weapon Faelen needs to win the war, or be killed.

Choosing the former, Nym is unleashed into a world of politics, bizarre parties, and rumors of an evil more sinister than she’s being prepared to fight . . . not to mention the handsome trainer whose dark secrets lie behind a mysterious ability to calm every lightning strike she summons.

But what if she doesn’t want to be the weapon they’ve all been waiting for?

9. Snow Like Ashes

Snow Like AshesSixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

8. A Court of Mist and Fury

A Court of Mist and FuryFeyre survived Amarantha’s clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can’t forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin’s people.

Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two.

7. Court of Fives

Court of FivesOn the Fives court, everyone is equal.

And everyone is dangerous.

Jessamy’s life is a balance between acting like an upper-class Patron and dreaming of the freedom of the Commoners. But away from her family, she can be whomever she wants when she sneaks out to train for the Fives, an intricate, multilevel athletic competition that offers a chance for glory to the kingdom’s best competitors.

Then Jes meets Kalliarkos, and an improbable friendship between the two Fives competitors—one of mixed race and the other a Patron boy—causes heads to turn. When Kal’s powerful, scheming uncle tears Jes’s family apart, she’ll have to test her new friend’s loyalty and risk the vengeance of a royal clan to save her mother and sisters from certain death.

6. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

HP and the Goblet of FireHarry Potter is midway through both his training as a wizard and his coming of age. Harry wants to get away from the pernicious Dursleys and go to the International Quidditch Cup with Hermione, Ron, and the Weasleys. He wants to dream about Cho Chang, his crush (and maybe do more than dream).

He wants to find out about the mysterious event that supposed to take place at Hogwarts this year, an event involving two other rival schools of magic, and a competition that hasn’t happened for hundreds of years. He wants to be a normal, fourteen-year-old wizard. But unfortunately for Harry Potter, he’s not normal – even by wizarding standards.
And in his case, different can be deadly.

5. Legacy of Kings

Legacy of KingsImagine a time when the gods turn a blind eye to the agony of men, when the last of the hellions roam the plains and evil stirs beyond the edges of the map. A time when cities burn, and in their ashes, empires rise.

Alexander, Macedonia’s sixteen-year-old heir, is on the brink of discovering his fated role in conquering the known world but finds himself drawn to a newcomer…

Katerina must navigate the dark secrets of court life while hiding her own mission: kill the Queen. But she doesn’t account for her first love…

Jacob will go to unthinkable lengths to win Katerina, even if it means having to compete for her heart with Hephaestion, a murderer sheltered by the prince.

And far across the sea, Zofia, a Persian princess and Alexander’s unmet betrothed, wants to alter her destiny by seeking the famed and deadly Spirit Eaters.

4. Queen of Shadows

Queen of ShadowsThe queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

3. The Young Elites

The Young ElitesI am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

2. Six of Crows

Six of CrowsKetterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone…

A convict with a thirst for revenge.

A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager.

A runaway with a privileged past.

A spy known as the Wraith.

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Kaz’s crew are the only ones who might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first.

1. Falling Kingdoms

Falling KingdomsIn the three kingdoms of Mytica, magic has long been forgotten. And while hard-won peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest now simmers below the surface.

As the rulers of each kingdom grapple for power, the lives of their subjects are brutally transformed… and four key players, royals and rebels alike, find their fates forever intertwined. Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and Magnus are caught in a dizzying world of treacherous betrayals, shocking murders, secret alliances, and even unforeseen love.

The only outcome that’s certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

It’s the eve of war…. Choose your side.

Princess: Raised in pampered luxury, Cleo must now embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of magic long thought extinct.

Rebel: Jonas, enraged at injustice, lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country cruelly impoverished. To his shock, he finds himself the leader of a people’s revolution centuries in the making.

Sorceress: Lucia, adopted at birth into the royal family, discovers the truth about her past—and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Heir: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, firstborn son Magnus begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword….

Returning Shows

10. Fresh Off the Boat

Fresh Off the Boat

Guys if you haven’t tuned into this comedy then you are seriously missing out. One of the first, if not the first all Asian American comedy on T.V. That’s pretty awesome. The mom is gut wrenching hilarious. I can’t get enough.

9. Scream Queens

Scream Queens

Ok, this show is totally trash… but trash that you just can’t seem to throw away. I don’t know what it is about this show that keeps me coming back and devouring it some more, I really don’t. But it’s working, so I will give them that.

8. Chicago Med

Chicago Med

Chicago Med is part of a trio (soon to be quartet) of dramas based in the city of Chicago. Obviously. This one is the medical portion. It aired it’s first season last year and I couldn’t get enough. The story-lines are always on point!

7. Chicago P.D.

Chicago P.D

Next up in Chicago is, Chicago P.D. This one deals with the police department. This one takes no prisoners with it’s story-lines. From rape cases, to murders, huge drug deals, to police brutality. I look forward to it every week!

6. Chicago Fire

Chicago Fire

Last up is the one that started it all, Chicago Fire. As you can probably guess, this one is about the fire department. It’s heading into it’s fifth season now and there is no stopping it. From high stakes fires, to in house drama and hook-ups, to women’s rights to be firefighters. Everything about this huge series is amazing. Did I mention that they do cross overs and 3 part stories on all the Chicago platforms?

5. Supergirl

Supergirl

Just like the Chicago shows, here comes my obsession with superhero shows. Up first is Supergirl. New to the CW this season, I can’t wait to see how they change up the show and characters for the new network. I hope it doesn’t change too much though. I loved the first season.

4. Arrow

Arrow

Here we have the original superhero show that started this new craze. Arrow is heading into it’s fifth season and digging back into it’s original roots. No more magic and super powers, but real life crime and vigilantes. I can’t wait to see what happens next, especially after how last season ended!

3. The Flash

The Flash

My favorite of the superhero shows, The Flash. I think it’s mostly because of the cute Grant Gustin. He portays Barry Allen perfectly, and I love all the meta-human madness this show has to offer. This season is going to shake up everything we know about The Flasg and I can’t wait!

2. How to Get Away with Murder

How to Get Away With Murder

Who doesn’t love this delicious crime drama. If you’re not watching this show, then you haven’t lived. Viola Davis is such an amazing actress, and there is a pretty diverse cast of characters too. A+ for that.

1. Teen Wolf

Teen Wolf

This makes me so sad guys. This will be the final season of Teen Wolf, and that makes me want to cry! This show is my guilty pleasure and I can’t believe it’s coming to an end. I really hope the writers do this finale justice. I don’t want to be disappointed.

REWIND: Minor Characters | Top 10 Tuesday

TOP-10-TUESDAY-NEW

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another Top 10 Tuesday weekly fun on my blog! Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. If you want to join in the fun, hop on over to their blog to see what it’s all about!

This week’s topic is REWIND: Top 10 Minor Characters.

This week’s topic is a blast from the past. The creators have allowed us to pick a past topic we might have missed or one that we really want to do. So I dug way into the past topics and decided to show you guys my favorite minor characters. To me minor characters are just as important as protagonists and antagonists. They give life and depth to the main characters in a way they themselves can’t. They are pivotal in thrusting the story forward. Sometimes they are even more liked then the main characters themselves. So let’s see who my top 10 are:

10. Manon from Heir of Fire

Heir of Fire

Manon is the scary badass witch that appears in the third Throne of Glass novel, Heir of Fire. From the get go I immediately took a liking to her. Even though she is ruthless and brutal, I can see that she has some sort of empathy in her. That one fight scene with Aelin was AMAZING too. I can’t wait to see her further develop as the series continues!

9. Diego from We Are the Ants

We Are the Ants

Diego is the mysterious new boy at school. Right away he makes friends with Henry our main protagonist and when the feelings begin to build between the two it was so sweet to watch. I loved that even though his past was a little sketch, he doesn’t let it prevent him from finding happiness and living his new life to the fullest. He treats Henry with care and respect, and I really liked that about him.

8. Ragnar from Golden Son

Golden Son

The big lovable bear (not really a bear) Ragnar that appears in Golden Son. Because he is an Obsidian he is feared by most. But it wasn’t until Darrow our main protagonist breaks down the barriers between them, that they become comrades and brothers. He is wise and stoic and truly believes in a better world for all colors. You couldn’t help but open your heart for Ragnar.

7. Nic from Falling Kingdoms

Falling Kingdoms

I love when authors are not afraid to create LGBT+ characters in their fantasy novels. Nic was surprise love for me. He started as the goofy best friend and confidant to Cleo our main protagonist, but soon he became more. He gets stronger, bolder, and more brave. He questions his feelings for fellow character Ashur, and gets heart broken. I connected well with him and felt everything he felt.

6. Roque from Red Rising

Red Rising

As much as I started to dislike Roque after Golden Son, I couldn’t help but pick him as one of my favorite minor characters in the beginning of this series. He was different from the other ruthless Golds. He was quiet and soft spoken, and treats Darrow with utmost respect. He easily shows his feelings and leaves nothing bottled up. He was real.

5. Kadmus from Empire of Dust

Empire of Dust

Even though we don’t go in great depths of Kadmus’ character yet, you can’t help but want to know more about him. What we do know is he is extremely loyal to his leaders. Even to the point of a betrayal being considered a reason to end your life. As much as he tries to hide his feelings for Alex, you can tell he admires him more then a King, but as a man. I know there is more to him, and I can’t wait to see it explored more.

4. Rasha from Storm Siren

Storm Siren

Rasha was a stand out character for me in the Storm Siren series. She was strong and opinionated. Not your typical soft spoken and polite princess. When the going got tough, she was there ready to jump into battle. She was Nym, our main protagonist’s best friend and closest confidant. You can tell she would never betray her in any way. It’s tough to find a friend like that.

3. Ashur from Gathering Darkness

Gathering Darkness

Ashur, the other half to Nic from the Falling Kingdoms series. He is introduced in the third book as the foreign prince sent over for the royal wedding with ultior motives. He is mysterious, but true. You knew he was up to no good, but you also knew he told the truth and his feelings were genuine. Due to unfortunate events, he takes a disappearance from the fourth book, but I’m sure we will be seeing more of him in the fifth.

2. Azriel from A Court of Mist and Fury

A Court of Mist and Fury

How could you not take a liking to the mysterious shadowsinger. He is loyal to Rhys and comrades. He will do anything to protect them even at the cost of his life. He would be your ride or die, and that is hard to find in life. I can tell he is a deep character that is bursting at the seams to get his story told and I can’t wait to learn more in the next book!

1. Lily and James Potter from Harry Potter

HP and the Philosopher's Stone

We all know they are dead since the beginning of the story. It’s not a spoiler. So why did they make this list? Well they were selfless and caring. They gave their lives so their son could keep his. They were the epitome of love, the one thing Voldermort could not combat against. They were a driving force for Harry’s decisions and I believe the reason Harry was the person he was. Without Lily and James, Harry wouldn’t have been the Wizard he becomes.
