The True Queen by Sarah Fine (The Impostor Queen #3)

Published by Margaret K. McElderry Books

January 2nd 2018

The True QueenNow that Ansa knows she is the destined queen of Kupari, she is desperate to find a permanent home for her people, the Kriegere, in the Kupari lands. But as the small band of warriors crosses into the foreign territory, Ansa loses her fragile grip on her newly-acquired—and violent—fire and ice magic and puts everyone, including her love Thyra, in danger.

Inside the walls of Kupari, Elli maintains the facade that she is the magical queen, with her secret—that she has no magic at all—on the brink of exposure every day. But as she tries to prepare the citizens to protect themselves from another invasion, unrest spreads as wielders like her beloved Oskar begin to lose control of their powers.

As Kupari grows increasingly unstable, with the land literally crumbling beneath their feet, and a common enemy once again threatening everything, these two young women on a collision course with destiny must find a way to save the realm and their people from total destruction.

In this epic conclusion to the Impostor Queen series, Sarah Fine’s sweeping tale of two fierce leaders imbued with unimaginable power and called to unthinkable sacrifice finally answers the question: who has the strength to be the True Queen?

Then they are seen by the gunmen. They run. Except they have nowhere to go. The narcos responsible for their families’ murders have put out a reward for the teens’ capture. There’s the also the fun stuff, like laughing with her best friend Violet, making on-the-spot documentaries, sneaking away for private swimming lessons at a secret pond in the woods. CHARACTERS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟      ROMANCE 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

WRITING 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟     FEELS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera is a contemporary YA about a boy who has lost his ex-boyfriend, Theo, and now must come to terms with his death by finding out more about his new life through Theo’s new boyfriend, Jackson. This book is equal parts touching, sad, and enjoyable. I highly recommend it!

The Good

Complex Characters

What I have come to expect from Silvera’s novels are complex characters. There is no shortage of them in History is All You Left Me. Griffin was by far my favorite character aside from Theo of course. Griffin has OCD, so he is always doing things in even numbers. Though this is a big aspect of his life and personality, it doesn’t take away from the overall picture Silvera is trying to tell. He is confused, grief-ridden, and just looking for answers. He came across exceedingly real on the page and I was able to connect with him on many levels.

Theo was also a stand out character for me. Although we only see him in the flashbacks of history, we still get a chance to know a great deal about him alive and in death. He was caring and sweet towards both Griffin and Jackson. He plays an extremely important role in History is All You Left Me for both boyfriends, past and present. He represents the rock that holds both characters grounded. In his death, they find the answers they need to begin to move on.

Good Grief

It makes sense that there would be a lot of grief going around in a book about losing the one you love the most in the world. Silvera does a fantastic job making the grief in both the story and the characters come across real, personal, and emotional. It is a hard thing to put across on page in way that resonates with readers, but History is All You Left Me does just that.

We see the most grief through Griffin. Being separated from Theo was hard on him and the only way to move on was to connect with Jackson and learn more about his time with Theo in California. Through is turmoil we see him grow and learn to accept what has happened and to cherish the history he shares with Theo.

Beautiful Writing

The writing in History is All You Left Me is a testament to how amazing Silvera is at what he does best. His writing is filled with emotion, humor, nostalgia, grief, and realness. He is able to bring his characters to life off the page and make you feel what they feel, and see what they see.

Flipping from the past to the present, Silvera offers a wider view into the lives of Griffin, Theo, and Jackson. With a distinction between both times, it never leaves the reader confused to what is going on, or what time frame you’re in. For contemporary, Silvera is a force to be reckon with!

The Bad

In my honest opinion there was nothing I found indecent about History is All You Left Me. What I will say is that it doesn’t live up to the amazingness that was Silvera’s first book, More Happy Than Not though. They each have their stories to be told, but I felt more when reading the former.

This was a great read and a fantastic sophomore novel for Silvera. Let me know what you guys thought of History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera! I would love to hear your opinions as well!

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Published by Del Rey

January 10th 2017

The Bear and the NightingaleAt the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for either marriage or confinement in a convent.

As danger circles, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this, in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

An Uninterrupted View of the Sky by Melanie Crowder

Published by Philomel Books

June 13th 2017

An Uninterrupted View of the SkyIt’s 1999 in Bolivia and Francisco’s life consists of school, soccer, and trying to find space for himself in his family’s cramped yet boisterous home. But when his father is arrested on false charges and sent to prison by a corrupt system that targets the uneducated, the poor, and the indigenous majority, Francisco’s mother abandons hope and her family. Francisco and his sister are left with no choice: They must move into the prison with their father. There, they find a world unlike anything they’ve ever known, where everything—a door, a mattress, protection from other inmates—has its price.

Prison life is dirty, dire, and dehumanizing. With their lives upended, Francisco faces an impossible decision: Break up the family and take his sister to their grandparents in the Andean highlands, fleeing the city and the future that was just within his grasp, or remain together in the increasingly dangerous prison. Pulled between two equally undesirable options, Francisco must confront everything he once believed about the world around him and his place within it.

In this heart-wrenching novel inspired by real events, Melanie Crowder sheds light on a little-known era of modern South American history—where injustice still darkens the minds and hearts of people alike—and proves that hope can be found, even in the most desperate places.

Sveta is stunned when officers show up at her door. Inexplicably, they know about a fainting spell she once had: a trance she slipped into. Something like a vision.

Some very powerful people believe Sveta is capable of serving the regime as much more than a dancer. They want to enlist her against the West as a psychic spy. She must explore this other talent if she is to erase the sins of her family, if she is to dance on the world stage for the Motherland—if she is to survive.

As Will starts to find his footing, he develops a crush on a charming, quiet girl named Cecily. Then an unprecedented opportunity arises: an experimental surgery that could give Will eyesight for the first time in his life. But learning to see is more difficult than Will ever imagined, and he soon discovers that the sighted world has been keeping secrets. It turns out Cecily doesn’t meet traditional definitions of beauty–in fact, everything he’d heard about her appearance was a lie engineered by their so-called friends to get the two of them together. Does it matter what Cecily looks like? No, not really. But then why does Will feel so betrayed?

The Free by Lauren McLaughlin

Published by Soho Teen

February 28th 2017

The FreeIn the beginning, Isaac West stole to give his younger sister Janelle little things: a new sweater, a scarf, just so she looked less like a charity case whose mother spent money on booze and more like the prep school girls he’d see on his way to school.

But when Isaac’s petty theft lands him in juvie, he’s cut off from helping Janelle. Friendless in a dangerous world of gangs and violent offenders, he must watch his every step. His sentence requires him to meet regularly for group therapy, where the inmates reenact their crimes, attempting to understand what happened from the perspective of their victims.

The therapy is intense. And as Isaac works through scenes with the group, he begins to recall a memory he’d long ago repressed. A memory that changed everything. And as he begins to piece together the truth about the circumstances that shaped his life—the circumstances that brought Isaac to Haverland in the first place—he must face who he was, who he is . . . and who he wants to be.

June’s late father’s mortal enemy, back in town from a prestigious writing program to care for his ailing father. June can’t seem to avoid Saul, whose very presence makes her ache with grief over her father, and soon the unthinkable happens: She finds she doesn’t exactly hate the gruff, sarcastic, and strangely tender boy whom she was born to loathe.

When June and Saul accidentally stumble into a bit of the forest magic, they are allowed a glimpse into the past at the fateful, horrible moment that started all the trouble between their families. Now June doesn’t know if this new discovery means she should hate the Angerts even more or if it’s finally time for her—and all of the O’Donnells before her—to let go.
