The Duke of Bannerman PrepWords are weapons. Facts can be manipulated. And nothing is absolute—especially right and wrong.

Tanner McKay is at Bannerman Prep for only one reason: the elite school recruited him after he brought his public school’s debate team to victory last year. Bannerman wants a championship win. Debate is Tanner’s life—his ticket out of his poor-as-dirt life and family drama, straight to a scholarship to Stanford and the start of a new, better future.

But when he’s paired with the Duke, his plans for an easy ride seem as if they’ve hit the rails. The Duke is the quintessential playboy, beloved by everyone for his laissez-faire attitude, crazy parties, and seemingly effortless favors.

And a total no-show when it comes to putting in the work to win.

But as Tanner gets sucked into the Duke’s flashy world, the thrill of the high life and the adrenaline of existing on the edge becomes addictive. A small favor here and there seems like nothing in exchange for getting everything he ever dreamed of.

But the Duke’s castle is built on shady, shaky secrets, and the walls are about to topple down.

** Received an ARC from Thomas Allen & Son for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion at all. Thank you!! **

First Line:

We’d been at the barbecue for less than two minutes, but several things were clear:

  1. I was underdressed.
  2. I had no idea how to pronounce several of the items on the menu.
  3. I had completely underestimated the length of time a group of moderately intelligent, narcissistic rich kids could hold a grudge.

Review

COVER 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟     PLOT 🌟🌟🌟

CHARACTERS 🌟🌟🌟🌟      FEELS 🌟🌟🌟

WRITING 🌟🌟🌟     ROMANCE 🌟🌟🌟

The Duke of Bannerman Prep by Katie A. Nelson is a retelling of the classic The Great Gatsby. I don’t consider myself a Gatsby expert, but I have read it more than the average person; more than 6 times over the course of my educational career. So when I say that this one definitely pulls it off I am telling the truth!

My Likes

Captures Gatsby Essence Perfectly

Like I said above, I’ve read The Great Gatsby many times in the past. So when I heard about this one, I was super excited. Let me start by saying The Duke of Bannerman Prep captures the essence that was the Gatsby himself.

The Duke was mysterious, rich, and threw lavish parties that were attended by everyone. Tanner was fascinated by the new world he has been thrust into as he is on scholarship at this private school. Together they were the epitome of Gatsby and Nick!

From the main plot points, to the relationships and hardships, everything fit so nicely together.

Good Cast of Characters

The Duke of Bannerman Prep hosts a wide cast of fun characters. From The Duke to Tanner, Kelsey, Abby, even Blake the hot headed jealous boyfriend. There was never a dull moment when it came to character interactions and I thought the dialogues were quite witty.

Nelson does a great job bringing these character’s to life and relating them to some of the characters from the original Gatsby tale.

Sweet Romance

Although is a slow burn, the romance between Tanner and Kelsey was very sweet indeed. I liked they worked their way up to relationship status through hanging out, studying together, helping each other out etc. It’s not often in the YA genre that we get a romance that isn’t almost instant.

Nelson took her time fleshing out the quirks and kinks of the relationship. Even through tough times the pair manage to pull ahead and work things out!

My Dislikes

Lack of Interest in Debate

The Duke of Bannerman Prep is heavily filled with debate. Tanner is on full scholarship to Bannerman for debate. All the other characters featured in the story are also on the debate team. So when I say that debate is a huge influence in the story, believe me.

It was my least favorite part of the whole story. I couldn’t relate to the topic, and I found most of those sections to be extremely dull.

I highly recommend this one if you enjoyed The Great Gatsby, like retellings, and fun casts of characters. Let me know what you guys thought of The Duke of Bannerman Prep by Katie A. Nelson! I would love to hear your opinions as well!

The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara

Published by Sky Pony Press

February 6th 2018

The Unbinding of Mary ReadeThere’s no place for a girl in Mary’s world. Not in the home of her mother, desperately drunk and poor. Not in the household of her wealthy aunt, where a girl could never be named an heir. And certainly not in the arms of Nat, her childhood love who never knew her for who she was. As a hired sailor aboard a Caribbean merchant ship, Mary’s profession―and her safety―depend on her ability to disguise the fact that she’s a girl.

Leastways, that’s what she thinks is true. But then pirates attack the ship, and right in the middle of the swashbuckling crowd of bloodthirsty pirates, Mary spots something she never could have imagined: a girl pirate. The sight of a girl standing unafraid upon the deck, gun and sword in hand, changes everything. In a split-second decision, Mary turns her gun on her own captain and earns herself a spot among the pirates’ crew.

For the first time, Mary has a shot at freedom. But imagining living life as her true self is easier, it seems, than actually doing it. And when Mary finds herself falling for the captain’s mistress, she risks everything―her childhood love, her place among the crew, and even her life.

But now for all her power, she is hiding a terrible secret: she is dying. And if she leaves the world before a new heir is ready, the spirits that inhabit her beloved realm will run wild, destroying her cities and slaughtering her people.

Naelin is one such person, and she couldn’t be further removed from the Queen—and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her world is her two children, her husband, and the remote village tucked deep in the forest that is her home, and that’s all she needs. But when Ven, the Queens champion, passes through the village, Naelin’s ambitious husband proudly tells him of his wife’s ability to control spirits—magic that Naelin fervently denies. She knows that if the truth of her abilities is known, it will bring only death and separation from those she loves.

But Ven has a single task: to find the best possible candidate to protect the people of Aratay. He did it once when he discovered Daleina, and he’s certain he’s done it again. Yet for all his appeals to duty, Naelin is a mother, and she knows her duty is to her children first and foremost. Only as the Queen’s power begins to wane and the spirits become emboldened—even as ominous rumors trickle down from the north—does she realize that the best way to keep her son and daughter safe is to risk everything.

Love & LuckAddie is visiting Ireland for her aunt’s over-the-top destination wedding, and hoping she can stop thinking about the one horrible thing she did that left her miserable and heartbroken—and threatens her future. But her brother, Ian, isn’t about to let her forget, and his constant needling leads to arguments and even a fistfight between the two once inseparable siblings. Miserable, Addie can’t wait to visit her friend in Italy and leave her brother—and her problems—behind.

So when Addie discovers an unusual guidebook, Ireland for the Heartbroken, hidden in the dusty shelves of the hotel library, she’s able to finally escape her anxious mind and Ian’s criticism.

And then their travel plans change. Suddenly Addie finds herself on a whirlwind tour of the Emerald Isle, trapped in the world’s smallest vehicle with Ian and his admittedly cute, Irish-accented friend Rowan. As the trio journeys over breathtaking green hills, past countless castles, and through a number of fairy-tale forests, Addie hopes her guidebook will heal not only her broken heart, but also her shattered relationship with her brother.

That is if they don’t get completely lost along the way.

The Bakersville DozenYou have four days to locate five treasured trophies. Break the rules and you all die. Happy hunting!

Back in September, the town of Bakersville, Ohio made national news when a video went viral featuring thirteen of the high school’s elite in compromising positions. Now it’s May, and every month since the “Bakersville Dozen” made their infamous appearance on the national stage, one girl has gone missing. Officials are no closer to identifying the criminal.

Bailey “Like a Virgin” Holzman is getting really fed up with the scrutiny. She just wants to enjoy the rest of her senior year and have an epic summer before heading off to college. So when she discovers a note in her locker on the last day of school inviting her on a scavenger hunt, she thinks it’s just a sweet surprise from her boyfriend trying to cheer her up.

But following the clue leads her, instead, to the first official casualty. And another sinister envelope. The killer is close, and it could be anyone. Even the people Bailey’s always trusted most—her best friend, her perfect boyfriend, or the boy-next-door she’s always pined for.

With the clock ticking, she faces a terrifying choice: play the game by the killer’s rules—follow the clues, tell no one, and no cops—for a chance to save the rest of the missing girls, or risk becoming the next grisly victim.
