Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society’s mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.

Finally, the time has come.

But devotion to honor and hunger for vengeance run deep on both sides. Darrow and his comrades-in-arms face powerful enemies without scruple or mercy. Among them are some Darrow once considered friends. To win, Darrow will need to inspire those shackled in darkness to break their chains, unmake the world their cruel masters have built, and claim a destiny too long denied – and too glorious to surrender.

The Good

  • Let me start by saying this one took me a while to read. I started it back in when it came out in February, but had to put it down. I wasn’t ready for it to end. I was worried and afraid. But I recently took part in Tome Topple, a big book read-a-thon, and thought there will be no better time to read this book. So I did.
  • If you’re looking for a book and series that will destroy you, put you back together again, and then rip you to shreds soon after, then the Red Rising Trilogy is for you!
  • Brown wrote the most satisfying ending I could have ever wanted. It wasn’t a happy ending, but it wasn’t sad on either. It was just perfect.

Justice isn’t about fixing the past, it’s about fixing the future. We’re not fighting for the dead. We’re fighting for the living. And for those who aren’t yet born.

Morning Star -Pierce Brown
  • The trials and tribulations that Darrow, Mustang, Sevro, Ragnar, Victra and many of our other beloved characters go through was heart breaking, but beautiful.
  • The world expands even broader, opening up your imagination for even more space exploration. We get to meet new characters, say good bye to some old ones (oh my heart hurts for that one), and see justice slowing beginning to be achieved.
  • Everything about this series is A++. You couldn’t ask for a better series!

The Bad

  • GUYS, I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH. THERE IS NOTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED UPON. OK??

Man is no island. We need those who love us. We need those who hate us. We need others to tether us to life, to give us a reason to live, to feel.

Morning Star – Pierce Brown

This finale broke me, but in all the right places. I couldn’t have asked for a better ending and I cannot wait for Iron Gold Trilogy, the continuation of this world! Ok, that’s it. Let me know what you guys thought of Morning Star by Pierce Brown! I would love to hear your opinions as well!

Until next time,

Pierce BrownPierce Brown spent his childhood building forts and setting traps for his cousins in the woods of six states and the deserts of two. Graduating college in 2010, he fancied the idea of continuing his studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a magical bone in his body. So while trying to make it as a writer, he worked as a manager of social media at a startup tech company, toiled as a peon on the Disney lot at ABC Studios, did his time as an NBC page, and gave sleep deprivation a new meaning during his stint as an aide on a U.S. Senate Campaign.

Now he lives in Los Angeles, where he scribbles tales of spaceships, wizards, ghouls, and most things old or bizarre.

June 2016 Wrap Up!

June-Wrap-Up

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another end of the month special. June has been a really good month for me. I managed to get a lot of reading done, had some pretty successful blog posts, and attended quite a few bookish events as well. Earlier in the month I attended a book signing by 3 Canadian authors for their first contemporary books, I also attended my first Read Harder Book Group meeting hosted by Book Riot peeps, and I was one of the lucky bloggers that got invited to Simon & Schuster Canada’s Fall Preview event this last Saturday. I had such a blast, and loved meeting all my fellow bloggers, and new authors as well!

So let’s take a look back at June 2016!

#TOMETOPPLE: Wrap-Up Results!

#TOMETOPPLE

Hey guys!

So the very first Read-a-thon that I participated in has ended. I had quite a lot of fun and I am proud of my results! For those that don’t know, Tome Topple is a two week Read-a-thon where you read as many 500+ page books as you can. There is no rush or pressure with this read-a-thon; you can 1 or 2 or 3 books if you like. There are five fun challenges you can try and complete. So without further ado, he are my results!

MY TBR

MY PROGRESS

Challenge #1: Read more than one tome (500+ pages) INCOMPLETE

Challenge #3: Read a tome that is part of a series COMPLETED

Challenge #4: Read over 500 pages in one week COMPLETE

The week of June 13- June 19 I read:

Saga Volume 4: 152 pages

664 pages

Challenge #5: Read an adult novel COMPLETE

Morning Star

Morning Star is an adult novel.

I managed to complete 4 out of the 5 challenges for this read-a-thon and I am so proud of myself! It was definitely a daunting one based around 500+ tomes, but it was very laid back. I managed to knock a very special book from my TBR, and without the read-a-thon I don’t think I would have gotten to it as soon as I had! I hope there will be another one in the future!

Until next time,

Netflix and Books Tag

TAGS

Hey guys!

I wasn’t tagged to do this, but I don’t care it looks like fun. Netflix and Books Tag was created by  Lauren from Bookmark Lit and Erica/Christy from Novel Ink. It involves two of my favorite things, binge watching shows and reading books!

GENERAL RULES FOR THE TAG:

  • Choose a book or book series that best matches the prompt provided
  • Feel free to change the TV show if you’d like it to reflect YOUR preferences!
  • A blank set of the prompts is located at the very bottom in the scroll box
  • Feel free to use our header graphic with the usual credits
  • Link back to us and tag some friends to join in!

Vampire Diaries: your ship sank or didn’t happen

Ruin and Rising

RUIN AND RISING BY LEIGH BARDUGO

I still believe that a certain cocky, funny, and over all amusing boy should have ended up with our heroine instead of that drab boy she got in the end. (To avoid spoilers, I have left out their names.)

Friends: best cast of characters/friendships

Six of Crows

SIX OF CROWS BY LEIGH BARDUGO

This books boasts a large cast of fantastic characters you can’t help but fall in love with. They are all so flawed, but they know how to work as a team when the going gets tough.

Arrow: favorite villain

Storm Siren

STORM SIREN BY MARY WEBER

Draewulf hands down is the worst of the worst (but in a good way). He just doesn’t know how to die! And how dare he try to make our heroine his play toy!!

Orphan Black: favorite sci-fi

Red Rising

RED RISING BY PIERCE BROWN

You all know this is my favorite Sci-Fi out there. It is so EPIC that it’s on it’s own level of awesomeness. Enough said.

Mistresses: hate that you love or guilty pleasure

Unrivaled

UNRIVALED BY ALYSON NOEL

This book was so trashy, but I can’t help but love it. It was like having a reality TV show in book form. I’m not afraid to admit how much I enjoyed all the drama and overall cheesey aspects of this book.

Orange is the New Black: couldn’t stop reading

The Serpent King

THE SERPENT KING BY JEFF ZENTNER

One of my favorite contemporaries thus far. I could not stop reading. It might actually be the first book to get my to almost cry. I felt the tears coming I swear!

I had so much fun doing this tag, and I hope you all will have fun as well. Check out the bottom of the post for other show and prompt ideas! As the creators of the tag said, feel free to switch things up a bit.

#TOMETOPPLE READ-A-THON

#TOMETOPPLE

Hey guys!

I will be participating in my very first read-a-thon this month. I was never a fan of read-a-thons because of all the pressure placed on reading as many books as you can in a short period of time. And as slow of a reader I am, it never appealed to me. BUT I have found the perfect read-a-thon for my specific situation.

TOME TOPPLE

Tome Topple is hosted by Samantha from Thoughts and Tomes and it is a read-a-thon for giant books. To participate you must read only books with more then 500+ pages. Tome Topple will run from June 5th (Midnight) to June 19th (11:59pm).

CHALLENGES

1. Read more than one tome (500+ pages)
2. Take a graphic novel break (doesn’t need to be over 500 pages!)
3. Read a tome that is part of a series
4. Read over 500 pages in one week
5. Read an adult novel

TBR

Morning Star by Pierce Brown – 524 pages (Challenge #1, #3, #4, #5)

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas – 640 pages (Challenge #1, #3, #4)

Saga Volume 4 by Brian K, Vaughan (Challenge #2)

You guys should join in too if you have big books you want to knock off your TBR like I do! I will be tracking my progress throughout the read-a-thon, so look out for that!

See you next time,

Fictional Items I Want | Top 5 Wednesday [#26]

NEW-TOP-5-WEDNESDAY

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another Top 5 Wednesday! This fun weekly meme was created by Lainey over at GingerReadsLainey. If you want to join in the fun and be apart of the #T5W … you can find all the details at the GoodReads page.

This week’s topic is Top 5 Fictional Items I Want.

With every book or series comes specific items that aid the characters in their journeys. Some are useful, some are magical, some are weapons, and some are just plain objects. The 5 I chose today are somewhat all of those things put together! So let’s check them out!

5. Astia Cuff from The Impostor Queen

cuff astias

This seemingly normal copper cuff bracelet allows the Valtia or any other Fire and Ice user to amplify and control their powers to new heights!

4. GravBoots & SlingBlade from Red Rising

Who wouldn’t want boots that can manipulate gravity which allows you to jump to places with very little effort? And you can’t forget Darrow’s famous SlingBlade! That weapon is brutal!!

3. The Kindred from Falling Kingdoms

Although holding all the Kindred is disastrous, I think it would be cool to have the ability to wield all 4 elements to save the day! Obsidian for Earth, Moonstone for Air, for Fire, and for Water!

2. A Stele from The Mortal Instruments

Stele

How cool would it be to be able to draw ruins to aid you in battle or for protection against your foes? I personally like the second from the bottom!

1. Hermoine’s Wand from Harry Potter

Hermoine Wand

Of course I want my favorite character’s wand! Look at ho elegant and pretty it looks! Simple sleek with an awesome design at the handle. Some serious magic has come from this one!!

I hope you enjoyed my Top 5 Wednesday this week. Which fictional items would you want in your arsenal?

Until next time,

Sig New
