Summer is fast approaching it’s end. The days of endless sun and beach going will be replaced with cooler days and leaves changing colors! I hold an unpopular opinion when I say that summer is my least favorite season of the year. I just can’t stand the heat… sorry not sorry.
But ushering in a new season doesn’t mean that I don’t have books to recommend! Over the last 3 months I have read some amazing books. So I wanted to take this opportunity to showcase them for you all to possibly add to your TBR’s!

As it is almost Valentine’s Day for most of the world, I thought it would be a good time to give out some recommendations for LGBTQ+ love stories! As the years go on we are beginning to get more and more LGBTQ representation in young adult novels. As a teen growing up, there wasn’t many characters/stories that I could relate and connect with. But nowadays I am glad there are more authors telling their stories through fiction!
Here are 5 LGBTQ+ young adult novels that I read and loved, and 5 LGBTQ+ novels that are coming out this year that I am super excited to read!
Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen
That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.
Half the time Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here – it’s their last year at Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

There are a few things Henry Denton knows, and a few things he doesn’t.

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera is a contemporary YA about a boy who has lost his ex-boyfriend, Theo, and now must come to terms with his death by finding out more about his new life through Theo’s new boyfriend, Jackson. This book is equal parts touching, sad, and enjoyable. I highly recommend it!
What I have come to expect from Silvera’s novels are complex characters. There is no shortage of them in History is All You Left Me. Griffin was by far my favorite character aside from Theo of course. Griffin has OCD, so he is always doing things in even numbers. Though this is a big aspect of his life and personality, it doesn’t take away from the overall picture Silvera is trying to tell. He is confused, grief-ridden, and just looking for answers. He came across exceedingly real on the page and I was able to connect with him on many levels.
Theo was also a stand out character for me. Although we only see him in the flashbacks of history, we still get a chance to know a great deal about him alive and in death. He was caring and sweet towards both Griffin and Jackson. He plays an extremely important role in History is All You Left Me for both boyfriends, past and present. He represents the rock that holds both characters grounded. In his death, they find the answers they need to begin to move on.
It makes sense that there would be a lot of grief going around in a book about losing the one you love the most in the world. Silvera does a fantastic job making the grief in both the story and the characters come across real, personal, and emotional. It is a hard thing to put across on page in way that resonates with readers, but History is All You Left Me does just that.
We see the most grief through Griffin. Being separated from Theo was hard on him and the only way to move on was to connect with Jackson and learn more about his time with Theo in California. Through is turmoil we see him grow and learn to accept what has happened and to cherish the history he shares with Theo.
The writing in History is All You Left Me is a testament to how amazing Silvera is at what he does best. His writing is filled with emotion, humor, nostalgia, grief, and realness. He is able to bring his characters to life off the page and make you feel what they feel, and see what they see.
Flipping from the past to the present, Silvera offers a wider view into the lives of Griffin, Theo, and Jackson. With a distinction between both times, it never leaves the reader confused to what is going on, or what time frame you’re in. For contemporary, Silvera is a force to be reckon with!
In my honest opinion there was nothing I found indecent about History is All You Left Me. What I will say is that it doesn’t live up to the amazingness that was Silvera’s first book, More Happy Than Not though. They each have their stories to be told, but I felt more when reading the former.
This was a great read and a fantastic sophomore novel for Silvera. Let me know what you guys thought of History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera! I would love to hear your opinions as well!
