#QuickThoughts – The Poppy War, Leah on the Offbeat, and Immortal Reign (05/27/2018)

Poppy War Leah on the Offbeat, Immortal Reign,

Hey Bookworms!

I’ve deciding to do a new weekly round up post for the books I’ve read each week and I’m calling it – QUICK THOUGHTS! Since it usually takes me forever to write reviews I thought this would be a nice way to get my quick little thoughts out about the books way before a review is posted.

So let’s get into it!

The Poppy WarThe Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
Published by Harper Voyager on May 1st 2018
Genres: Fiction, Fantasy, Historical
Pages: 544
Format: Hardcover

My heart… it hurts. This book will break you in many ways, both physically, emotionally and mentally. (But all in good ways… sort of). It’s quite hard to put into words what this book means. Although it is completely fantastical in it’s own fictional world, there are ties to actually historical events. Many of these events people don’t even know about.

This book tackles genocide, rape, war, drug and substance abuse and so much more. So please go in to it knowing the content warnings. This is not a book for the faint at heart. But it is an AMAZING story.

Leah on the OffbeatLeah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli (Creekwood #2)
Published by Balzer + Bray on April 24th 2018
Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, LGBT
Pages: 343
Format: Hardcover

Can I say this was the biggest disappoint of the year so far? Because it was and it hurts me deeply even say that. I did not like Leah as a character. She is not the Leah I remember from Simon’s book. Also there is some problematic bi-rep in the form of a conversation between two of the characters and one of them denouncing the other’s sexuality.

What I wished this could have been, it wasn’t. I honestly wish it was a direct Simon sequel with POV’s of Simon and Blue. So sad… so sad.

Immortal ReignImmortal Reign by Morgan Rhodes (Falling Kingdoms #6)
Published by Razorbill on February 6th 2018
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy
Pages: 391
Format: Hardcover

Omg, noooooooo! Why is it over? I don’t want it to be over! (Cries for days and days)

But seriously. This is my all time favorite fantasy series and it’s now over. Morgan Rhodes could do no wrong. This book was everything I could have asked for and more. All my babies in one book working together and separately to take down the Kindred! I want more!

It was such a pleasant ending that I have no complaints about. I also liked how open ended it left us. Leaving possibilities for future stories to be written. I see what you did there Morgan!

Have you read any of these titles? I need to discuss them so bad with someone, so please let me know your thoughts down in the comments!

Until next time,

  1. I only read Leah because I wanted to see Simon and Blue as a couple and they were so cute together… but I really din enjoy Leah… I guess she was just too abrasive for me… and I totally agree about that particular problematic scene.. din expect that at all…

  2. Oh no, I’m so sad to hear you didn’t like Leah! But I’ve heard similar things about that book across the community, so unfortunately I think Becky just didn’t live up to her first two amazing books. I’m meeting the author of Poppy War at BookCon, so hopefully I can read it soon! I’ve heard nothing but glowing praise. And Falling Kingdoms has been on my TBR foreeeever, I can’t wait to start that series!

    1. Yeah Leah was a let down sadly. But YAY! I would love to meet the author of The Poppy War. She seems like a nice lady!

Please please please read the Falling Kingdoms series soon. It’s so EPIC! 💙💙

      1. Yeah I’ve heard a lot of people talk about the book and how graphic it can be. It’s made me even more interested in the book. Hopefully can get my hands on it soon.

  3. I felt the same with the open ended ending for Immortal Reign. I am dying for there to be something else. I am going to continue to cross my fingers forever if I have to, because I need more.
