Before he was Batman, he was Bruce Wayne. A reckless boy willing to break the rules for a girl who may be his worst enemy.

The Nightwalkers are terrorizing Gotham City, and Bruce Wayne is next on their list.

One by one, the city’s elites are being executed as their mansions’ security systems turn against them, trapping them like prey. Meanwhile, Bruce is turning eighteen and about to inherit his family’s fortune, not to mention the keys to Wayne Enterprises and all the tech gadgetry his heart could ever desire. But after a run-in with the police, he’s forced to do community service at Arkham Asylum, the infamous prison that holds the city’s most brutal criminals.

Madeleine Wallace is a brilliant killer . . . and Bruce’s only hope.

In Arkham, Bruce meets Madeleine, a brilliant girl with ties to the Nightwalkers. What is she hiding? And why will she speak only to Bruce? Madeleine is the mystery Bruce must unravel. But is he getting her to divulge her secrets, or is he feeding her the information she needs to bring Gotham City to its knees? Bruce will walk the dark line between trust and betrayal as the Nightwalkers circle closer.

The Review

Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu is the second book in the DC Icons series, this time following one of my favorite superheroes ever, Batman! I was a little apprehensive about reading this one because it’s a story about Bruce Wayne as he leads up to becoming Batman. I was afraid it was going to be another take on his parents being murdered origin story. Thankfully we get a fresh take on the young billionaire with a brand new never before seen villain!

I liked the direction Lu decided to go with Bruce Wayne. For once he isn’t a rude asshole. But I guess years of fighting Gotham’s baddies in the dead of night will do that to a guy. But besides that, she makes Bruce more human than I have seen him in any other incarnation. He actually has feelings and a conscious. Crazy right?

Thankfully she does keep some of the Bruce Wayne qualities we learned to love, like falling for girls who do crime. And I mean literally falling in love with the villain. Typical Bruce. When will he learn?

I also want to talk about the woman in Batman: Nightwalker. Not only are the majority of them POC, but they are also women in high power. I loved the inclusion and portrayal on Lu’s part. I think it’s very important to have strong female representation in the books we read. So it was nice to see that she didn’t go the white and male route with her story.

I loved the villain Nightwalkers, especially Madeleine. She was so mysterious, cunning, brilliant, and hands down the best character of the story; aside from Bruce of course.

I liked the story, the flow of the writing, and the characterizations a lot. I’m glad Batman was included in this series and that it wasn’t a typical Batman story. I highly recommend Batman: Nightwalker if you’re a fan of Marie Lu or Batman in general!

Have you read Batman: Nightwalker? What did you think of it?

  1. I definitely had fun reading Nightwalker because it’s Marie Lu! And the dynamics of Bruce and Madeleine’s relationship did intrigue me and the suspense surrounding their supposed one-sided relationship did add a few twists in the story, which kept me guessing! Great review, Jesse 🙂

  2. Great review! How was the romance in this one? I know Madeleine is made out to be like an anti-hero type but she seems alright to me. Anyway, I can’t wait to read this one because anything Marie Lu writes is bound to be a bop. Looking forward to Catwoman next!
