The Review

There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins is a young adult horror novel about a girl who gets shipped off to be taken care of by her grandmother in a rural town after a horrible accident. A year after her arrival, Makani’s classmates begin being murdered one by one. A past full of secrets and a future that isn’t looking so bright, Makani and her friends have to step up and find out who is behind the murders plaguing this small town before they find themselves face to face with the knife.

First and foremost, I am a huge fan of horror movies, especially the slasher flicks. Call it morbid, but I just love the scared feeling you get from watching them. So when I heard of There’s Someone Inside You House, I knew I had to read it immediately after it comes out. I did just that. I went in with low expectations, because that is what you do with horror movies especially; and I quite enjoyed it! There were a couple snags for me, but overall, it was a good addition to the slasher genre.

One highlight for me was the characters. I loved Makani’s grandmother of all characters. She was sweet and loving, but also strong handed and stern with Makani. Now as for the kids, you don’t really get much backstory and information on them except for Makani and Ollie, the MC’s. Because of this, it was hard to care about them before they got gruesomely murdered. It was a little different from what I’m used to. You tend to care more about the characters in horror movies more because you get to see them, so reading about them kind of left it void.

Another highlight for me were the death scenes. Some of them were elaborate, some were gruesome and had me squirming in my seat. No two deaths were the same and each one was well planned out by Perkins. Her writing wasn’t overly scary, but the premise and the set up of the scenes were frightening.

Now comes the snags I was talking about earlier. One of them is the killer’s reasoning behind the whole murdering the teens things. I thought it was weak. Real weak. I don’t want to spoil anything what so ever, so I will just leave it at that. The killer’s handy work was spot on, but his logic and reasoning was lackluster. Another snag is the middle portion of the book. It was quite dry. There was a big gap between the one death and the next. I think Perkins could have spiced up the middle a bit more.

If you’re a fan of the horror movie slasher flick genre, then I highly suggest picking up There’s Someone Inside Your House ASAP!

  1. I’m an absolute wimp and easily scared but I 100% want to pick this up and give it a whirl. I’m trying to read some Adult Thrillers and this one sounds so intriguing, definitely want to find out the reason as to why one of the Killer’s reasoning was weak to you!
    Love your review!
