My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon is a contemporary novel about a girl who is allergic to the world and has never left her safety bubble that is her home. Completely content living in seclusion with just the company of her mother and her nurse Carla, she has never needed anything more. But when the adorable and mysterious boy moves in next door she is left with wanting more from life. How will she accomplish this when she can’t go outside without dying? Let’s find out!

 Life was seemingly normal as normal can get when you’re allergic to the world. At least it was to Madeline. That is until a new family moves into the house next door and she meets the cute mysterious boy through the window. She was never a girl who needed a lot to be happy, but now she would give everything to meet this boy face to face and be out in the world that he lives and breaths. As their budding romance builds through windows and online messaging, they finally get to meet. Now all she wants to do is get away and escape from both their lives no matter what the cost is on her health!

I could never imagine not being able to experience the world like Madeline can’t. But living in her clean little bubble she seemed content. But as falling in love is hard to do without touch, smell, and physical interaction, she begins to want more from life and doesn’t seem content anymore.I love every aspect of the plot and the way that the story was written. I think it was perfectly written in a unique and creative way that gives you the complete personality of Madeline as a character.

With all the fun drawings and images throughout the book you really get more of a reading experience while still enjoying the narratives and content of the story. Oh how my heart was rooting for Madeline and Olly!

Madeline is so full of personality and intelligence. She has huge dreams after meeting Olly that she can’t wait to get out and experience the world no matter the cost on her health or for the fact that she might not survive the outdoors. It was very interesting being able to experience the world with her for the first time. From how the fresh air fills your lungs, or sand in between your toes, everything was a new and fresh experience for her. She was such a dreamer that I couldn’t help falling in love with her child like character!

Olly, poor Olly. His family is so so broken that it hurts reading about his home life and seeing it from Madeline’s eyes. Because of the abusive nature of his father we see how protective he gets of his mother and sister which carries over to his relationship with Maddy. He wanted to offer Maddy the world but knew that didn’t come without complications. His patient and calm personality was also very admiring. I mean how hard would it be to like a girl that you can’t even touch or kiss.

Quick shout out to Carla, Maddy’s nurse. She never wanted Maddy to live without experience and always taught her life is worth living and to never give up!

Everything’s a risk. Not doing anything is a risk. It’s up to you.

This is an extremely fast paced book that takes place mostly in the confines of Maddy’s home and her outside adventure. Everything had to be pristine and white, clean and decontaminated in her home. It was a little off putting how neat and organized everything had to be for her to live a comfortable life. Truly puts things into perspective how much we take for granted in our life that Madeline would have never gotten to experience. The setting was a great example of the extreme measures one who has SCID (the acronym of her disease) must live with in their everyday life.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon was an adorable book. I loved the plot, writing, characters and setting so much. If you’re looking for a light fun read, then I suggest you pick this up. You won’t regret it one bit! Now I’m off to live my life and not take for granted all the experiences I get to have that SCID patients do not. Let’s live life to the fullest!
