Quote for Day 3

“White shouldn’t be the default any more that straight should be the default. There shouldn’t even be a default.”

Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda – Becky Albertalli

Over the last couple years diversity in books as very much improved. But it’s still unfortunate that a lot of different types of media are still promoting majority white casts. Why can’t a main character be black, or asian, or hispanic? Why can’t a main character be lesbian, or gay, or transgender? When you’re born you are taught that a boy should love a girl and vice versa, thus creating the default. Why should the LGBTQ community have to come out at all? If that’s the case then straight people should have to come out as well. I guess what I’m trying to say is that the world still needs to change and this is just one more obstacle for us to overcome.

Well there you have it, my last quote of the challenge. I hope you enjoyed and leave a comment if you connect with this quote.

I TAG YOU!

  1. I completely agree with this one! I haven’t read SvsTHSA yet but I seriously think I need to read it! I love diverse books.

And of course there shouldn’t even be a default!

  2. This is a favourite quote of mine despite not having read the book! Its so true, especially in our world today where the issue of equal rights for LGBT are becoming more common. There should be no such thing as normalcy in terms of gender and preferences. Being straight should not be a default or a ‘normal’ thing.

    1. Precisely. That’s why this quote speaks volumes right now in society. Gay marriage has been legal in Canada for ten years now. With America finally jumping on board, it’s a step forward. But there is still a long ways to go.
